RATIONAL was founded in 1973 by Siegfried Meister and built its first combi oven in 1976. The company specialises in thermal food preparation, and its two current product families, the iCombi combi-steamer and the iVario multifunctional cooking system, were introduced in 2020. Its largest production plant is at Landsberg am Lech, Germany.

MarineLine

The marine programme is not a separate product family but a version of the standard appliances. According to RATIONAL, the MarineLine is approved by DNV GL (formerly Germanischer Lloyd) and meets USPHS hygiene requirements, which matters for passenger vessels calling at US ports. It is offered on electric models only: every electric iCombi Pro and iCombi Classic, the Combi-Duo stacked arrangements and the iVario range. The marine version is not available for gas appliances.

What changes on a marine unit

On table-top iCombi units the MarineLine adds an adjustable door-stay that holds the door open in heavy seas, a hinging rack for ships with an upstand on the rack rails, and a metal electrical connection. Floor-standing 20-level units get stainless steel feet that can be welded to the deck or fixed slip- and tilt-proof, and a mobile oven rack for ships whose fixing bracket stops accessories sliding out. On request, floor-standing units can have metal protective bars on the support legs and stable metal covers over the control panel and dial, and a metal grid for the door glass and lateral impact protection can be ordered where trolleys and rough seas make knocks likely.

iVario on board

The iVario is DNV GL certified for installation in the galley. The table-top sizes are fixed with an attachment kit or placed on a MarineLine stand whose stainless steel feet are screwed or welded to the deck; the Pro L and Pro XL stand on a stainless steel substructure fixed the same way. A SOLAS signal safety temperature limiter is available as an option and can be wired to an external signalling device and emergency stop.

Supply voltage

Marine iVario units can be ordered for 3 NAC 400 V and 415 V, and without neutral conductor from 3 AC 200 V up to 480 V, including 440 V, with 50 Hz and 60 Hz operation possible. RATIONAL publishes iCombi data at 3 NAC 400 V 50/60 Hz, with other voltages on request. We confirm the voltage, frequency and fuse rating against the vessel's switchboard before an order is placed.

Service at sea

RATIONAL runs a marine service organisation with service locations in Dubai, Genoa, Hamburg, Miami, Nantes, Shanghai, Singapore and Turku, and an international marine service hotline.

What we list

The catalogue carries the RATIONAL models that are available in the MarineLine version: the iCombi Pro in seven sizes from the XS 6-2/3 to the 20-2/1, the iCombi Classic in six sizes from 6-1/1 to 20-2/1, and the iVario 2-XS, iVario Pro 2-S, Pro L and Pro XL. Each product page gives the published technical data, the marine equipment for that size and the installation arrangement on board.
