Miele Tumble Dryer PDR 944 [EL SOM] – 44 kg, 3 AC 220-240V 50/60HZ, Stainless steel

Forty‑four kilograms of load on an 800 litre drum sets the PDR 944 [EL SOM] at the top end of Miele’s Benchmark marine dryers. With a quoted programme duration of 28 minutes at a specific energy consumption of 0.52 kWh/kg, this is a high-throughput unit for vessels with heavy laundry rotations.

The electrical data is aligned with shipboard practice: the dryer is specified at 3 AC 200–208 V 50–60 Hz with a total connected load between 25.9 and 30.9 kW and a fuse rating of 100 A. That makes it a straightforward connection to a dedicated laundry sub-board, but the maximum floor load of 3535 N and a net weight of 294.3 kg need to be carried into the structural and vibration design of the laundry deck. Heat dissipation into the room is stated as 4 MJ/h and the emission sound pressure level at the workplace is 63 dB(A) re 20 µPa, so the ventilation and acoustic treatment of the space can be sized from published figures rather than estimates.

Physically, the machine stands 1640 mm high, 1206 mm wide and 1385 mm deep, with a gross shipping envelope of 1766 × 1390 × 1474 mm. The 520 mm door opening and 180 degree door swing on a left hinge give clear access for bulky items such as 4 synthetic duvets or 8 synthetic pillows per load, as well as the 727 cloths at 22 g or 373 office mops at 100 g indicated in the loading guide. The same guide covers more specialised items such as 16 respirator masks, 6 overalls, 9 over jackets, 4 down duvets and 8 down pillows, up to 5 summer horse blankets, which reflects the offshore specification where mixed PPE, bedding and textile loads are routine.

Drying is on an exhaust-air system with a maximum evaporation capacity of 37.2 l/hour. The electric heater rating is 36 kW, with a stated heater range between 24.7 and 29.4 kW depending on configuration. With a service life of 40000 drying cycles, this gives a clear basis for lifecycle planning on cruise or offshore units where the dryer will be running multiple shifts per day. The residual moisture controlled user interface means that the control logic is working to a moisture target rather than a fixed time only, which is important when the actual loading varies between, for example, 168 cotton mops at 40 cm and 188 microfibre mops at 50 cm.

The PDR 944 [EL SOM] is the right choice where the laundry has to handle large mixed loads quickly in a confined footprint, and where an exhaust-air dryer with 4 MJ/h of room heat input fits the HVAC and ducting concept. It is less suitable for very small galleys or yachts that do not have the electrical capacity for a 25.9–30.9 kW connection, or where there is no provision for an exhaust-air run from a 3 AC 200–208 V 50–60 Hz appliance.
