Nine kilograms at a 1:9 load ratio in an 80 l drum defines the working scope of the Miele PWM 909 in a shipboard laundry. With a spin speed of 1300 rpm and a g factor of 518, it is specified to leave loads at 47% residual moisture on a cold rinse and 44% on a hot rinse.

On board, the physical envelope and the numbers behind noise, heat and floor loading feed straight into the yard’s calculations. It is tested to 30000 operating hours, uses a maintenance-free synchronous motor and a heavy-duty heater element, and runs on electric heating with a total connected load of 5.25 kW, of which 5 kW is heater. Supply is 3 AC 400 V 50 HZ with a 16 A fuse rating, so the electrical demand is predictable for the switchboard designer. Water inlets are one cold and one hot, each via a 1/2" hose with 3/4" threaded union, with discharge handled by a DN 22 drain pump where gravity fall is not available.

Cycle data show what a watch can clear per hour and what it costs in utilities. On a standard programme with a cold water connection the machine uses 56.2 l and 1.2 kW over 49 minutes; with cold and hot water connected, consumption is 59.3 l and 0.23 kW over 45 minutes. Specific consumptions are 6.3 l/kg and 0.13 kWh/kg on a cold connection and 6.6 l/kg and 0.03 kWh/kg on a hot connection. In the ECO programme, cold-water operation draws 49.7 l and 0.82 kW in 34 minutes, or 52 l and 0.14 kW over 32 minutes with both cold and hot. Those figures, combined with EcoSpeed wash rhythm and continuous wash temperature monitoring, let the operator trade cycle time against fresh water and energy demand in a controlled way.

The control system is M Touch Pro Plus and freely programmable, which makes it straightforward to set up dedicated programmes for the documented on-board textiles. The 9 kg capacity is explicitly rated for items such as 4 respirator masks, 2 helmets, 1 overall, 2 over jackets, 1 synthetic duvet and 2 synthetic pillows, or 1 down duvet with 2 down pillows. For cleaning work, the load capacity corresponds to up to 204 cloths at 22 g, 42 cotton mops at 40 cm / 190 g, or 55 office mops at 100 g per batch, plus the specified ranges of microfibre and stairway mops and even 2 summer horse blankets. Recycling rate is quoted at 96%, which is relevant where end-of-life disposal has to be documented.

This unit is a good fit where a 9 kg, 3 AC 400 V 50 HZ machine with 30000 tested operating hours matches the crew size and the mix of PPE, mops and bed linen, and where deck structure and HVAC are designed around the quoted 2480 N floor load and 2.3 MJ/h heat dissipation. It is the wrong choice where individual batches routinely exceed the listed textile capacities or where the laundry concept depends on handling substantially larger single loads than 9 kg per turn.
